ABSTRACT

It is also defined as the study of crude drugs. A "crude drug" means a dried unprepared natural material of plant, animal or mineral origin, which is used for medicine. Pharmacognostic evaluation helps to screen the commercial varieties, substitutes, adulterants and any other quality control of the drugs. It is a simple and reliable tool, helps to obtain information about biochemical and physical properties of crude drug. The American Society of Pharmacognosy defines pharmacognosy as "the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources.The drug selected for the present study Vanshlochan(Bamboo manna), of the family Graminaceae (Poaceae). Here an attempt is made to study the drug pharmacognostically in this chapter.
