Abstract

STANDARDIZATION OF AYURVEDIC FORMULATIONS BY HIGH PERFORMANCE THIN LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY- A REVIEW

Shadab Alam* and Jyoti Gupta

ABSTRACT

Ayurvedic preparations are available in different dosage forms like solid dosage form (gutika, churna), semisolid dosage form (avaleha), liquid dosage form (asava, arishta) have many uses in Ayurvedic system of medicine. They help to balance the three doshas (VATA, PITTA and KAPHA) in the body, and restore homeostatic balance that enhance in the body’s digestive system and spreads to the tissues. Standardization and analysis of the marker compound of the Ayurvedic and other poly herbal formulation has always been a task. For Researchers, standardization is the demand for the present time to set standards for establishing the quality and efficacy of the herbal preparations. HPTLC is very useful in qualitative and quantitative analysis of polyherbal formulations, main advantages over other conventional chromatographic techniques such as flexibility (esp. stationary and mobile phase), choice of visualizing wavelength, user friendly, with quickness at a moderate cost. The present study compiles the progress made on the development of optimized and validated HPTLC method for the simultaneous estimation of marker compounds in different Ayurvedic formulations. HPTLC analysis is quite helpful in setting up of standards. The present study is try to compile the major studies carried out on Ayurvedic formulations like: churnas, vati/gutika, arishta, asava, avaleha, kwatha etc. which may be of use to develop/compile the fingerprint profile for evaluating the purity & quality of ayurvedic formulations, thus helpful as a reference in developing pharmacopoeial standards.

Keywords: Ayurvedic formulations, Vati, Churnas, Standardization, Standard compound, HPTLC, Fingerprint profile, Rf values.
