ABSTRACT
Kshara is the substance possessing Ksharana and Kshanan properties. Explanation of these two words by Dalhana is as under Ksharana means one which mobilises and removes the deformed skin, flesh etc. or which removes the vitiated Doshas. Kshanan means which destructs the deformed Skin, Flesh etc. In Samhita period detail descriptions of Kshara Kalpana regarding their methods of preparation, definition, varieties, properties and applications are found. Kshara having Lavana (salty), Tikta (bitter) Rasa; Ruksha (dry), Teekshna Guna (properties); Ushna (hot) Virya (potency); and Katu (pungent) Vipaka (attributes of drug assimilation).
