ABSTRACT
In dosage forms, solid orals gain maximum popularities, about 85%, because of many advantages over others. The desire of improved palatability in orally administered products has prompted the development of numerous formulations with improved performance and acceptability. In case of geriatric and pediatric patients dysphagia is the most common problem. Common among all age groups, dysphagia is observed in about 35% of the general population, as well as up to 60% of the elderly institutionalized population and 18-22% of all patients in long-term care facilities. To overcome this drawback fast dissolving tablets are developed, because this dysphagia causes decreasing patient compliance. Fast dissolving tablets are an emerging trend in novel drug delivery system and have received ever-increasing
demand during the last few decades because of so many advantages of FDT like easy administration, increased bioavailability, rapid action, patient compliance. These fast dissolving tablets are dispersed or disintegrate within 1-3 min in saliva without chewing. The bioavailability of some drugs may be increased due to absorption of drugs in oral cavity and also due to pregastric absorption of saliva containing dispersed drugs that pass down into the stomach. Moreover, the amount of drug that is subject to first pass metabolism is reduced as compared to standard tablets. For faster disintegration of tablet use of suprdisintegrant is necessary in adequate concentration. This review covers excipients, formulation methods, advantages, disadvantages and evaluations parameters for fast dissolving tablets.
