ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF PISONIA GRANDIS R . Br LEAF EXTRACT AND ITS FRACTION
Dr. S. Jayakumari*, Dr.V. Ravichandiran and Nageeswara Rao
ABSTRACT Pisonia grandis ( Family Nyctaginaceae) commonly known as “ Lachaikottai keerai, The leaves are used in our traditional system of medicine the as analgesic, anti inflammatory, diuretic and hypoglycemic agent. So in the present study the antimicrobial activity of leaf extract of Pisonia grandis and its flavanoid rich fraction wascarried out. The zone of inhibition by agar well diffusion and disc diffusion methods were measured for determining antimicrobial action of aqueous and its Ethylacetate fractions. The results were compared with that of standard antibiotics (Ampicillin and Cefotoxime)The Ethylacetate fraction of Pisonia grandis exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against S.aureus, E.coli, K.pneumoniae and C.albicans.. Among the methods the agar disc diffusion method showed better result compared to that wel diffusion method. The fraction was most effective against S.aureus, with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 1.2 mg/ml.The antimicrobial activity of ethylacetate fraction of Pisonia grandis was found to be effective in inhibiting the growth of S.aureus than aqueous extract which may be due to presence of phenolic compounds such as flavanoids fractions.
