THE STATUS OF OBESITY IN SELECTED AREAS OF COASTAL GUYANA

ABSTRACT
This paper investigates the status of obesity in Guyana in Region 2, 3, 4 and 10 of Guyana. The status of obesity in Guyana in Region 2, 3 ,4 and 10 was evaluated via an inspection of the calculated BMI of selected persons within age groups of (15-20), (25-35), (40-50) and (55-70). Only for Age Group, (40-50) in Regions 4 and 10, the BMIS were greater than 30.00, indicating obesity for the two age groups. The highest BMI of 33.56 was obtained for Age Group (40-50), for Region 4, whereas the lowest BMI of 22.5 was obtained for Age Group (55-70) in Region 4. For region 2, Age Group (25-35), (40-50) and (55-70) were found to be overweight. For region 3, Age Group (40-50) was found to be overweight, whereas for region 4 and region 10, AgeGroup, (25-35) and (55-70) were found to be overweight respectively. As it pertains to slightly overweight, Age Group (15-20) of region 2, Age Group (25-35) and (55-70) were noted for region 3, whereas Age Group (15-20) was noted for region 4 and Age Group (15-20) and (25-35) were noted for region 10. Only Age Group, (15-20) for Region 3 was found to be normal (healthy). Also, interestingly, Age Group (55-70) for Region 4 was found to be normal healthy. Residents were also subjected to Questionarres responses as it relates to Obesity.
