ABSTRACT
The seventh chapter of SushrutaSamhita, deals with surgical instruments number one hundred and one in all, of which the hand is the most important, in as much as all of them depend on the hand for their principal auxiliary and as none of them can be handled without it. Human hand is made up of 27 bones, 29 joints, 34 muscles, at least 123 named ligaments & 48 named nerves which move the fingers and thumb. All manmade instruments have a limited degree of freedom. They can move and work only in two dimensions, While, ―hand‖ has three dimensional range or degree of freedom of movement. Sushruta had given the earliest description of fulcrum in the reference of surgical instruments. It can be concluded that Acharyasushruta had a great knowledge of engineering science as he was aware about the mechanics also and said that ―Hastmevapradhantamamyantranam.‖
