Vd. B. R. Patel*, Dr. Neha Kotak and Preeti Pandya

ABSTRACT

Solanum torvum Swartz. is a tomentose shrub growing upto 1.5-3m height. Root of the same was collected from Saurashtra region, Gujarat. Pharmacognostical and Physicochemical analysis including TLC were conducted based on standard procedure. Pharmacognostically root of the same is branched and woody with longitudinal fissures and scattered lenticels. Microscopically root showed the presence of simple and compound starch grains, stone cells, uniseriate medullary rays etc. Physicochemical parameters like loss on drying (6.60% w/w), total ash (3.9% w/w), alcohol soluble extractive (21.20% w/w) and Water-soluble extractive value (15.50% w/w), pH 5.75 etc were estimated. Carbohydrates, Tannin, Triterpenoid, Alkaloid were found in qualitative analysis of functional group. Quantitative alkaloid analysis showed 0.5% alkaloid in the plant. Heavy metal analysis revealed the presence of lead i.e 25.310 which is within the API range. Three spots were found in TLC under 366nm. Thus all these help to identify the plant Solanum torvum Swartz.

Keywords: Solanum torvum Swartz, Alkaloid, Sclerenchyma.
