Dr. Lithin Joseph*, Binu Francis and Dr. B. S. Suresha

ABSTRACT

Background: Myocardial infarction (MI) is characterized by an imbalance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand, causing cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and sudden death. Various clinical ischemic manifestations are caused by obstruction of coronary blood flow by coronary stenosis, thrombosis, and/or hyperconstriction (vasospasm) of epicardial and microvascular coronary arteries with an Increasing global prevalence and incidence was conducted at tertiary care hospital, Karnataka. Study approval was obtained from Ethical committee of hospital for ethical clearance. Objectives: This was a prospective observational study with the aim to assess the drug prescribing pattern in myocardial infarction patients. Methods and Methodology: The study has been conducted and data was collected from male and female patients who were satisfying the inclusion criteria. The patient’s case records, medication charts, lab reports and other relevant documents from general medicine department are collected with a suitably designed patient profile was used to collect required information. The results were generated using percentage calculations and graphs. Result: The drug prescribing pattern includes monotherapy and combination therapy. Among 121 patients 86 patients (71.07%) receives monotherapy and 35 patients (28.93%) receives combination therapy. Discussion: In monotherapy, the most commonly prescribed drugs were LMWH, Aspirin, streptokinase, nitroglycerin. In combination therapy, more patients were prescribed with LMWH+Aspirin, LMWH+ Streptokinase, Aspirine+Streptokinase, Aspirin+Nitroglycerin, LMWH+Nitroglycerin+Aspirine, LMWH+Aspirin+Streptokinase. Conclusion: In monotherapy, LMWH was the most commonly prescribed drug followed by aspirin, streptokinase and nitroglycerine. The number of patients prescribed with LMWH were more in males than in Females. In combination therapy, LWMH +Aspirin combination were mostly prescribed and were more in males.
