ABSTRACT
Transdermal drug delivery system (TDDS) is the topically administered medication, on application to the skin, releases the drug through the skin producing systemic effect at a predetermined rate. The transdermal drug delivery system has attracted considerable attention because of its many potential benefits such as better patient compliance, avoidance of gastrointestinal disturbances, hepatic first-pass metabolism and sustained delivery of drugs to provide steady plasma profiles, particularly for drugs with short biological half-life, reduction in systemic side effects and enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Thus, the TDDS aim to increase the flow of drug via the skin into the systemic circulation and simultaneously decrease the retention and metabolism of the drug in the skin. Skin is the largest and most
accessible organ of human body serves as a site of drug application for local effect and systemic effect. A transdermal therapeutic system is essentially a multi-laminate structure that is composed of Drug, Polymer matrix, Penetration enhancers, Adhesives, Backing membrane, Release linear. This review gives the introduction of TDDS and their method of preparation.
Keywords: Transdermal delivery system, skin penetration enhancer, drug polymer, controlled drug delivery, transdermal patch.
