EVALUATION OF ANTIFERTILITY POTENTIAL OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF WHOLE PLANT OF AMARANTHUS SPINOSUS IN FEMALE ALBINO RATS.

ABSTRACT Amaranthus spinosus Linn. (Amaranthaceae) called as Pigweed, is an annual herb found in throughout India. Ethnomedicinally the plant is used as a source to treat several disorders; the antifertility activity of the ethanolic extract of Amaranthus spinosus is now being investigated. The antizygotic, blastocystotoxic and abortifacient activity were investigated. The data suggests that the Amaranthus spinosus ethanolic extract exerted antifertility and antiestrogenic effects in female rats. The results revealed that ethanolic extract of Amaranthus spinosus (ASE) treatment caused reduction in reproductive organ weights, number of implants.
