ABSTRACT

Background: Siddha system of medicine pioneering in emphasizes the biological activity of the various phytocomponents with respect to the etiology and pathophysiology of various dread full disease emerging in humans and animals. It is evident that the medicinal plants used in siddha has potency of acting as an anesthetics, analgesics, antimicrobial, immune modulators, Hepato , neuro and nephro protectants. Vai vidangam (Embelia ribes) is a well know raw herb used in Siddha medicine known for its effectiveness in treating intestinal worms and skin diseases. Powdered raw drug is utilized for formulating several siddha preparations including distillate form of medicines. Objectives: The main objective of the present investigation is to prepare the distillate form Embelia ribes and to analyze the active compounds using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Methods: The distillate of Vai vidangam has been prepared as per the Siddha classical references and the sample is studied through GCMS analysis. Results: Vai vidanga Theeneer was found colorless, with peculiar odor and with mild unpleasant taste. The data’s obtained from the GC-MS indicates presence of two compounds of organic nature, Hexanoic acid and 3 methyl mannoside. Hexanoic acid is a well-known compound validated for its Anti-microbial and Anti- Parasitic property and this may have a leading role in the bio activity of the distillate. Conclusion: From the results obtained from the present investigation it was concluded that the Vaividanga Theeneer could serve as a better therapeutic candidate in infectious disease condition.
