ALLIUM CEPA: A VERSATILE MEDICINAL HERB

ABSTRACT
Allium cepa is a traditional nutraceutical and medicinal plant. After tomatoes it is the most important garden crop in the world. It has excessive nutrient value. It contains phenolics and flavonoids that have potential anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-cholesterol and antioxidant properties. Allium cepa have polysaccharides such as peptides, flavonoids and essential oil. It also contains 88% water, 1.5% protein and vitamins B1, B2 and C. Onions are used in traditional Indian spices and are of great health significance. Allium cepa have characteristic odour, flavor and pungency. It is known by several names such as potato onion, small onion, potato onion, shallots etc.It is the richest source of flavonoids. It has a wide spectrum of biological activities. It also contains organo sulphur compounds. Allium cepa is a potential therapeutic agent. It may be used as a food additive as well as medicine. It is also useful in treatment and preventing cancer, obesity, diabetes, inflammatory diseases etc. This review article focused on all types of uses and also review the entire description of Allium cepa.
