ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate drug utilization pattern of oral hypoglycaemic agents and antibiotics for UTI in Type-2 diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: A Descriptive and observational study was carried out in 150 patients for a period of 6 months in a tertiary care hospital. Datas were collected form patients case sheet, prescriptions and from laboratory datas. Patients treated with oral hypoglycaemic agents and antibiotics for UTI were used for the study. Patients demographic data, causative organism for UTI, drugs used for the treatment, co-morbidities were analysed. Results: From our study we found that 56.67% patients were male. The greatest number of patients(32.67%) having DM were in the age group of 51-60 years. Metformin (55.00%)
was the most frequently prescribed drug. The combination of Metformin and Glimepride was mostly used. 26.66% of the diabetic patients developed UTI, E.Coli(50%) being the most common causative organism. Nitrofurantoin was most frequently used antibiotic against UTI. Conclusion: Metformin was most commomly used OHA and Glimepiride and metformin combination drugs were the most commonly used drugs. Nitrofurantoin was the mostly used antibiotic for UTI. Overall polypharmacy was high even though polypharmacy among antidiabetic drugs were low.
