ABSTRACT
Diabetes is metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycaemia, glycosuria, negative nitrogen balance and ketonaemia. The objective of this study is to evaluate Invivo anti diabetic activity of whole plant extracts of Euphorbia cyathophora on Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Acute toxicity studies were followed as per OECD guidelines 423. The anti-diabetic activity of Euphorbia cyathophora was evaluated in diabetic wistar rats. Diabetes was induced by intra-peritoneal injection of Streptozotocin 50mg/kg body weight. The anti-diabetic effect of plant extracts was compared with standard drug Glibenclamide. The biochemical parameters such as alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, urea, creatinine, lipid profile, tissue homogenate enzymes and lysosomal enzymes were estimated. In vivo study reveals that animal treated with ethanolic extract of Euphorbia cyathophora shows significant reduction in blood glucose, body weight, triglycerides, HDL, cholesterol in Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. In Euphorbia cyathophora treated group, there was a significant reduction of enzymes such as Alkaline phosphatase, Acid phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and no significant increase in urea and creatinine level when compared to the control group which reveals the protective nature of the plant source. It concludes that Invivo antidiabetic activity of whole plant extracts of Euphorbia cyathophora on normal and Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats was evaluated and concluded that it possesses anti-diabetic activity.
