ABSTRACT
Drug interactions occur when the effect of one drug is changed due to
co administration of another drug. It may results in the change of
therapeutic response of the drugs. The objective of the study was to
find the incidence and type of potential & clinically significant drugdrug
interactions between antihypertensive drugs and other classes of
drugs in the patients which were suffering from hypertension disease.
A total of 200 hypertensive cases were included in this prospective,
unicenteric, observational study at a tertiary care hospital in
Bangalore. Out of 200 prescriptions with different classes of drugs, it
was found that 116 and 41 drug-drug interactions were noted in the
male and female groups respectively .these interactions were present with different
antihypertensives which were co administered and also with other classes of drugs co
administered with antihypertensive. The most frequent interaction was between Furosemide
& Metoprolol 13(5.5%) in both males and females groups, the next higher interaction was
between Aspirin & Telmisartan 9(3%). Out of 157 interactions, 138 were moderate
interactions and 18 were major interactions.
