ABSTRACT
In the present study, an attempt has been made with Hexane, Ethyl
acetate, Methanol and water extracts of Mucuna pruriens fresh leaves
and Allium sativum bulb cloves to determine the antiannelid activity of
traditional medicines. In vitro antiannelid activity of extracts of both
plants were determined by their action on Pheretima posthuma (earth
worm) at different concentrations. Both the plants exhibited dose and
time dependent antiannelid effects or mortality of worms and was
recorded with time. Among all water extract showed the best mortality
activity in Mucuna pruriens and Allium sativum. The combination of
methanol extract of Allium sativum and water extract of Mucuna
pruriens showed the potential death rate of earth worms. Thus our data
indicates that the methanol and water extracts exhibit potential natural antiparasitic activity.
Mucuna pruriens water extract, 100mg/ml, showed 54.31 minutes to cause death and 16.51
minutes to cause paralysis to earth worm. Allium sativum water extract, 100mg/ml, showed
29.46 minutes to cause death and 14.58 minutes to cause paralysis to earth worm by methanol
extract. However combination of both plant extracts of (Mucuna pruriens water and Allium
sativum water) and (Mucuna pruriens water and Allium sativum methanol) showed paralysis
effect of 8 to 11 minutes and death rate time of 24 to 29 minutes. Hence the combination
effects of the two plant extracts had decreased paralytic time and death rate time in earth
worms. Therefore both plants can be used in regulating the growth of earth worms.
