Dr. Hema Seshan, Dr. Ashwini S. and *Dr. Ramya Ganesh

ABSTRACT

Aim: To assess the knowledge, attitude and practice in prescribing antibiotics among interns and general practitioners. Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 100 dental interns of 2 teaching institution and 100 general practitioners residing in Bangalore, Likert scale was used to assess KAP and responses ranged from strongly disagree to strongly agree; always to never and True false or uncertain type. Data were analysed using SPSS software. Chi Square test was used to compare the distribution of responses for various study questions provided by the Interns and Practitioners group with level of significance [P-Value] set at P>0.05. Results: Results show that there was a statistically significant difference in knowledge, attitude and practice scores among interns and general practitioners. General practitioners showed superior knowledge, practice and attitude in prescribing antibiotics to patients when compared to interns. Conclusion: Survey has revealed that interns and general practitioners are aware of prescribing antibiotic but the casual attitude of interns in general practice has to be taken care of and hence educational interventions are necessary to improve their knowledge, practice and attitude in prescribing antibiotics to patients.

Keywords: Antibiotics, prescription, likert scale, KAP.
