Sharada Nalla* and Eswar Kumar A.
ABSTRACT
Alzheimer’s is an age dependent progressive neuro degenerative
disorder. This is the most common type of dementia. Which is
characterized by detoriated memory; thinking and behaviour affect the
daily social life of the person. There are some therapeutic agents to
treat alzhemers such as cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor
antagonists. But these are having limited effectiveness. There are no
agents to completely cure the alzhemers but those agents can postpone
the onset or progression of alzhemers. Now there is a need to
investigate about the new compounds which can cure the disorder.
Some herbs may help to improve cognitive functions of brain and may reverse the
progressive pathological changes of alzhemers disease although the exact mechanism of their
action is still not clear. Natural plant extracts are considered as safe and acceptable treatment
over the synthetic medicines. The main objective of this review is to provide the list of
various plants which enhance the cognition and reverse the pathology of alzhemers that could
be baseline information in drug discovery and development of new leads for alzhemers
disease.
