A STUDY ON DRUG UTILIZATION IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
The aim was to study prescribing pattern of drugs, drugs administration process and what patients understand about drugs and disease in Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) patients. One hundred and twenty patients (mean age 67 years; 75% male) were recruited; 60 patients were assigned to an intervention group and 60 to a usual care as control group. Intervention patients received education on disease state, medications and life style modifications. Patients were followed up at the time of discharge and after 15 days during a scheduled visit. The CCQ (Clinical COPD Questionnaire) and CAT (COPD ASSESMENT TEST) questionnaires were administered to all patients on the day of admission, at the time of discharge and after15
days. Outcome measures included hospital admissions, emergency department (ED) visits. Major group of patients in this study were between 60-70 yrs of age group with grade3, according to Modified Medical Research Council dyspnoea scale. The major factor involved was smoking followed by use of biomass fuel & tobacco. Various lab parameters and Questionnaire were analysed in study to check the impact of counselling on patient.All patients in this study received combination therapy. Among prescribed drugs Bronchodilators including xanthine derivatives were the highly prescribed drugs followed by antibiotics (88.24%) and the least common drugs prescribed are analgesics (34.1%). The Present study was conducted on 120 patients suffering from mild, moderate or severe COPD showed a marked improvement in health status in all patients who followed the counselling instruction.
