ABSTRACT
Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a rare but potentially a life threatening
fatal disorder most often occurs due to the adverse drug reaction. The
mechanism behind this disorder is not clearly understood. There are
many drugs known to cause such fatal reaction, one among is
allopurinol. It is commonly used in chronic gout but known to cause
many adverse reactions like toxic epidermal necrolysis and steven
Johnson syndrome. We present a case of a 67 year old male, who
developed generalized maculopapular lesion with painful blisters
involving more than 30% of body surface area for the past 2 days after
administration of allopurinol and was diagnosed as drug induced toxic
epidermal necrolysis. Due to timely intervention and appropriate
treatment the patient was rescued from a life threatening disorder.
Keywords: Allopurinol, chronic gout, toxic epidermal necrolysis, adverse drug reaction.
