ABSTRACT
Introduction: The present study was to evaluate the correlation
between ABO blood groups with diabetes mellitus in the population of
Kotputli city. Methods: This study was conducted at a private clinic in
Kotputli City. The city is situated in the State of Rajasthan. The study
was conducted in between January 2016 to December 2016. Total of
165 subjects was taken for the present study. Probability sampling
based on simple random selection method has been adopted. Result:
Among 165of them, 104 subjects were diabetic and rest 61 subjects
were taken as healthy individuals. The result showed that the
frequency distributions of diabetic individuals respect to the blood groups are A: 5.77%, B:
24.04%, AB: 10.58% and O: 59.61%. The Frequency of O is significantly higher in diabetic
patients whereas the frequency of A is significantly lower among diabetic patients. Frequency
of allele B is same among these two types of individuals. When the combination of ABO
blood group and Rh factor is considered, it can be observed that O+ group is more prevalent
in diabetic individuals than in normal individuals. Diabetes mellitus is more prevalent among
males than in females (60% to 40%). Conclusion: The results conclude that Blood group AB,
A is protective against Diabetes mellitus, blood group O is in highest risk factor for diabetes.
As the present study has shown the prevalence of diabetes mellitus is more for a particular
group than others so by using this information certain precaution can be taken against
diabetes mellitus. Moreover, the studies conducted in small no of the population. The Study
shows a significant difference between diabetic and non diabetic individuals varying with
blood group.
