ABSTRACT
Drug utilization review play an important role in helping the health
care team to improve the prescribing, administration and use of
medication. The aim of drug utilization review is to make sure that,
drugs are used appropriately, safely and effectively to improve the
patient health status. Urinary tract infection is most common infection
and the prevalence is high in females. For treating urinary tract
infection empirically, the sensitivity pattern of antimicrobials should
be assessed. With this information, the study was conducted to assess
the empirical prescription pattern and sensitivity pattern of
antimicrobials. A prospective observational study was conducted in a
tertiary care teaching hospital. From the total patients in medicine ward, 164 patients were
selected who met the inclusion criteria. Cephalosporins, Ntrofurantoin were the most
commonly prescribed antibiotics in this study. E.coli was the major cause of urinary tract
infection in our hospital. Antimicrobial resistance for prescribed antibiotics for empirical
treatment increases in our study. These present findings and previous reports reveals the
importance of a new antibiogram to help the physician for the treatment of UTI.
