ABSTRACT
Siddha system of medicine become popular throughout the world in recent days as it claims high curative value with minimum toxicity and have less side effects. It has been estimated that 70-80% of world’s population relies on traditional healthcare. The mode of preparation and plant used in traditional medicine varies from place to place. In addition acceptance of traditional medicines, especially herbal medicines in the developed world is sharply increasing. Siddha also have standardized protocols for purification and detoxification of certain phytocomponents used in specific formulations. As this will greatly reduce the toxicity and also enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the formulation. The main aim of the present investigation is to standardize and to establish the monograph for the formulation Poovarasu Nei (PN) as per AYUSH regulatory guidelines. The results
obtained from standardization and physiochemical analysis clearly reveals that total ash value of PN is about 0.68%, Specific Gravity 1.095, Viscosity 16.87 psa, Refractive index is 1.52, Iodine value 139.7. Saponification value is 248.174 and LOD is about 4.73 %. The result of the phytochemical analysis indicates that the formulation PN shows the presence of flavonoids, glycosides, steroids, triterpenoids, phenols, saponins, coumarins and carbohydrates. Total iron content of the PN was found to be 0.235 mg/ml and also the formulation is devoid of heavy metal cadmium. Sterility profiling of PN reveals the absence of microbes such as E-coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus Aureus and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. HPTLC finger printing analysis of PN indicates the presence of 13 significant peaks with Rf value ranging from 0.06 to 0.79. From the results of the present investigation it was concluded that the formulation PN is highly sterile, safe and also possess biologically significant phytocomponents which possess versatile therapeutic property.
