TAGARA A DIVINE HERB USED IN ANCIENT INDIA – LITERARY AND PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEW

ABSTRACT
Himachal Pradesh is situated in sub Himalayan zone and has a wide range of herbs which are not found in other parts of country and Tagara is one of them. Tagara is found at an altitude of 3000 to 4000 meters. It is used in havana and worships because of its antimicrobial properties and is helpful in psychological disorders. The plant has numerous synonyms which shows its importance since ancient times. The rhizome or rootstock of Tagara has great medicinal value and is used both, externally as well as internally. But overdosage of Tagara causes various disorders, which makes its use cautiously. Present paper is an attempt to highlight various Ayurvedic uses as well as its literary and pharmacological reports on Tagra (Valeriana jatamansi Jones).
