A REVIEW ON INVITRO AND INVIVO EVALUATION OF GASTRO RETENTIVE FLOATING DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEM
Ramanathan M.* and Venkatesan N.
ABSTRACT
Gastro retentive floating drug delivery system is an attractive and most beneficial system for narrow absorption window drugs. It is a designer drug delivery for stomach ulcer and H.Pylori infection patients. Gastroretentive drug delivery system effectively enhancing bioavailability, minimize side effect, reduced drug administration frequency and thus provides better patient compliance. In gastro retentive formulation stringent quality control and high care surveillance are needed right from drug selection to final formulation. Even a small careless negligence will not produce desired effect and entire process may goes to drain. So the evaluation part is most
important parameter for commercialization of drug from industry to public. The aim of the present review is to discuss the various evaluation techniques applied in floating tablets quality, scientific basis behind that the testing, methods to perform the test, acceptable or pharmacopoeia complies limit values, instruments and their images. The study elaborately focus on five major evaluations under the headings of drug characterization, micrometric properties or pre compression evaluation, post compression evaluation including kinetic model approach, invivo study and stability studies.
Keywords: Floating drug, characterization, micrometric properties, pre and post compression, stability.
