Abstract

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF QUINOLINE DERIVATIVES

Syed Gouse Firoz*, Jyoti Sahu and Pushpendra Patel

ABSTRACT

Quinoline family compounds are widely used as a parent compound to make drugs fungicides, biocides, alkaloids, dyes, rubber, chemicals, flavoring agents, antiseptic. Its derivatives are one of the important constituents of pharmacologically active synthetic compounds such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial agents, cytotoxic activity, antidotal, antibacterial and so on. The present work is done to explore the possibility of getting novel antimicrobial agents by linking 3-formyl-6-nitroquinoline-2-thione with various aryl amines to obtain novel Schiff and anti-oxidant activities. Two new targeted Schiff based quinolones (BSAT-1-2) were screened for wound healing activity and antioxidant property by taking standard povidone iodine and ascorbic acid. BSAT-2 shown percentage wound contraction on 16th day 94%, standard povidone-iodine shown wound contraction on the same day was 87% and control shown less than the BSAT-2 i.e. 84.5% and the percentage inhibition of hydrogen peroxide of BSAT-2 at 125 μg/ml is 66.54% and the reference standard ascorbic acid at same concentration was found to be 43.95%. From the results, it clearly signifies that BSAT-2 is more potent.

Keywords: Quinolines, antimicrobial agent, antioxidant, Schiff base quinolines (BSAT-1-2), Povidone iodine and Ascorbic acid.
