ABSTRACT
Gastrointestinal diseases are the diseases that affect the digestive system, which consists of the organs and pathways and processes responsible for processing food in the body. Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders affect millions of people of all ages-men, women, and children. They are the most commonly presented GI illnesses seen by doctors in primary care of gastroenterology. The present study was undertaken to determine the anti-ulcer properties of the ethanolic extract of Aegle of marmelous (AM). Ethanolic extract of the leaves. AM by ethanol induced ulcer. The ethanolic extract at 200mg/kg has significally inhibited ulcer formation. There was significant dose-dependent decrease in the ulcerative lesion index produced by ethanolic extract of AM leaves 200mg/kg in rats as compared to the standard drug Ranitidine (10mg/kg, b.w.orally).The reduction in gastric fluid volume, total acidity in ethanol induced ulcer rats proved the anti ulcer activity of AM leaves. The anti-ulcer property may be related to the tannin and flavonoids present in the extract. These results clearly indicated that ethanolic extract of the leaves of AM is effective against ulcer disease.
