ABSTRACT
Toxicology deals with the study of behavior, effects and identification of poisons. Study of adverse effect on living organism knows as Toxicology. Toxicology testing is done in order to determine the extent up to which a poison can produce harmful effects. Toxicology testing is undertaken by all the major biological fields including Biotechnology, Pharmacology, and other research organizations. Till now, majorly 4 types of toxicants have been determined i.e. chemical, Physical, and Biological whereas toxicity studies are of 4 types i.e. Acute, Sub chronic and chronic toxicity studies. There are certain principles to be followed while performing a toxicological study which include: The study should follow GLP rules, it should be performed by a trained staff, the equipments used must be calibrated, and while doing a task SOPs must be followed.
Keywords: Acute toxicity studies, Chronic toxicity studies, Sub-chronic toxicity studies, Teratogenicity, Genotoxicity, Carcinogenicity.
