ABSTRACT
The objective of this work was to develop a taste masking technique for cefixime trihydrate and formulate the taste masked product as dry suspension for pediatric use. Indion 204, a crosslinked acrylic acid polymer based ion exchange resin was used to form a tasteless complex with cefixime. The complexation process was optimized for maximum drug loading. Taste evaluation of the complex revealed that no bitterness was experienced during the test interval. Formation of complex was confirmed using DSC and FTIR studies. The complex was formulated as dry suspension using sucrose, xanthan gum, aerosil, flavours and preservatives. The reconstituted suspension showed no release of the drug at salivary pH upto three days of storage period. At gastric pH, the complex showed almost 95% of drug release within 50
minutes.
