Abstract

THERAPEUTIC STUDY OF MUSABBAR (ALOE) IN THE MANAGEMENT OF KASHTARTAVA W.S.R. TO DYSMENORRHOEA

ABSTRACT

Musabbar (Aloe barbadensis Miller’s extract) is maketed as Elua, musabbar, ghikuwara rasa. Musabbar, Eliyaka, Krishnabola, Virasrava, Sahasara, Kumarirassambhava and Kanyasara, Kumarisara are its various synonyms. Musabbar is an ingredient of formulations named as Vijyadi vati and Rajah pravartani vati which are mentioned to treat Kashtartava in Bhaishjyaratnavali. Kashtartava is the disease where Artava is shaded with great difficulty and pain. It is correlated with the term Dysmenorrhoea which is defined as painful menstruation of sufficient magnitude so as to incapacitate day to day activities. Totals 15 patient of kashtartava (dysmenorrhoea) were studied clinically with musabbar capsules (500mg each) given TID for six menstrual cycles. Results of pain intensity were extremely significant statistically (t=12.43) with percentage relief 71.06%, duration of pain were significant (t=3.16) with percentage relief 54.18%. Amount of flow was increased by 50%. Drug also showed significant results in associated symptoms like nausea, breast tenderness, giddiness, anorexia and irritability. Hence this single drug is efficacious as a line of treatment for Kashtartava (dysmenorrhoea).
