ABSTRACT

Buccal drug delivery is a favorable route and adds a several advantages over other routes. In which a novel mucosal adhesive preparation is the buccal patch which is gaining more intrest because of its high systemic bioavailability compared with other oral route preparations. In the present work buccal patches are prepared by solvent evaporation method and performed various evaluation paramaters like FTIR studies, thickeness, swelling studies, %mucodhesion folding endurance, diffusion studies. The drug and excipient compatability was studied by FTIR. Thickness of patch was in the range of 0.05-0.12mm F1 is having less thick. The surface Ph was measured which is showing pH in the range of 6-7. The degree of swelling of formulations F1 to F5 was found to be 7-26%. F3 formulation with eudragit as a mucoadhesive polymer having more swelling property that is about 26% compared with other polymer. The % mucoadhesion was found in the range of 66-85%. The ethyl cellulose based buccal patch was having that’s is F5 having more mucoadhesive property with 85%. F1 has maximum drug release about 85.7% up to 12 hrs. And F4 also maximum drug release up to 76.97%., it is minimum for F3, F5 with a drug release of 70% up to 12hrs. The drug release kinetics of F1 formulation show controlled release rate characteristic of drug. Thus the formulation F1 was selected as a optimized formulation when compared to other formulations.

Keywords: FTIR studies, mucoadhesion.
