FLAVONOID: A PHARMACOLOGICALLY SIGNIFICANT SCAFFOLD

ABSTRACT
Flavonoids belong to a group of polyphenolic compounds, which are classified as flavonols, flavonones, flavones, flavanols, flavan-3-ols and isoflavones according to the positions of the substitutes present on the parent molecule. Flavonoids comprise a vast array of biologically active compounds that are ubiquitous in plants, many of which have been used in traditional eastern medicine for thousands of years. The aim of this review was to give an overview of the research in the field of therapeutic potential of flavonoids and to promote further study.
