ABSTRACT
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a determined inflammatory infection that affects the mucus membrane of the oral cavity. It is a T-cell mediated autoimmune disease in which the cytotoxic CD8+ T cells bring out apoptosis of the basal cells of the oral epithelium. Numerous antigen-specific and nonspecific inflammatory mechanisms have been put to the fore to explain the buildup and homing of CD8+ T cells subepithelially and the consequent keratinocyte apoptosis. In this review we are discussing about pathogenesis and treatment modalities of OLP.
Keywords: Apoptosis, autoimmune, basal keratinocytes, corticosteroids, oral lichen planus.
