ABSTRACT
Over the last few decades, colon targeted systems have gained interest to overcome the problems of specific delivery of the active pharmaceutical agents (API) to the colonic region, contingent upon the physical and chemical characteristics of the drug and physiological properties of colon. Amongst different types of delivery systems, microflora activated delivery systems are the most efficacious approach for colon delivery due to the tremendous bacterial population as well as accompanying enzymes, triggering the release of drug from delivery system. When combined with a pH dependent system, novel formulation CODESTM opens the way for effective colon targeting delivery of various therapeutic agents. CODESTM has acquired more attention because of targeted delivery, thus enabling dose reduction, with more coherent results of drug absorption, and targeting of drug towards particular absorption window in GIT. Concentrating maximum drug in the luminal region provides localized action, and also drug protection from the non favorable environment in gut. This article gives a complete overview of CODESTM as a Propitious approach to effectively target therapeutic agents to colon.
