A STUDY ON EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENT OF MALNUTRITION IN HEAMODIALYSIS PATIENTS USING SGA SCALE

ABSTRACT
Haemodialysis is a central issue in management of ESRD. Malnutrition
is the most prevalent cause of death in Haemodialysis patients. The
study aims at assessing the prevalence and extent of malnutrition
among the patients undergoing haemodialysis by providing leaflets and
verbal tips. This is a prospective observational study where patients
undergoing haemodialysis are enrolled and they are observed and
evaluated for the signs of malnutrition by using a Subjective Global
Assessment Scale (SGA Scale), Six months of the study conducted at a
tertiary care hospital on patients undergoing haemodialysis revealed
various results. In this study Gender- 63.88% of males, 54.16% of
females have mild malnutrition. Literacy- 45% of illiterates and 90% of literates has mild
malnutrition. Economic status- 100000 -69.2% has
mild malnutrition. Social history: Alcoholic- 38.4%, None -64.86%, smoker- 70%.
Comorbidities: Absent-54.5%, Present-61.2%. Moderate malnutrition characterized as
Gender- 45.83% of males, 36.11% of females has moderate malnutrition. Literacy: Illiterates
55%, literates 10%. Economic status: 100000-
30.7%. Social history: Alcoholic-61.5%, None-35.1%, smoker-30%. Co-morbidity absent in
45.4% and present in 38.7% of the subjects. It is concluded that malnutrition in the patients
undergoing haemodialysis can be a result of Age, Illiteracy, Low economic status, Comorbidities
which includes HTN, Diabetes mellitus.
