ABSTRACT
A simple, rapid and sensitive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of Co(II) and Ni(II) by using ditiolphenole [DP] as an analytical reagent. DP has been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. DP in the presence of diphenylguanidine(DPG) extracts M(II) quantitatively (99.0-99.4%) into chloroform from an aqueous solution of pH range 4.7-7.7. The chloroform extract shows an intense peak at 515-542 nm (λ max).Beer’s law is obeyed over the M(II) concentration range of 0.04-3/6 μg/cm3 . The Sandell’s sensitivity and molar absorptivity for M(II) –DP-DPG system is 1.72-1.89 ng cm-2 and (3.12-3.36)×104 L
mol-1 cm-1 respectively. The composition of extracted species is found to be 1:2:2 [M : DP : DPG] by Starik–Barbanel relative yield method, straight line method, equilibrium shift method and crossed lines method. Interference by various ions has been studied. The proposed method is rapid, sensitive, reproducible and has been successfully applied for determination of M(II) in the Sewage water, Bottom sediments and plants.
