ABSTRACT
The main aim of the present study is to design and develop sustained release matrix tablets of Clopidogrel bisulfate using different release retarding polymers. Different polymers used are HPMC K4M, HPC alone and in combination with other polymers like, Ethyl cellulose, Guar gum, Xanthan gum, Karaya gum, Sodium CMC. The tablets were prepared by direct compression technique using 16 station rotary tablet punching machine. The thickness, weight variation, hardness, friability and drug content of all the formulations were within the limits. In-vitro drug release studies showed 24 hr drug release of all the formulations. Among all the formulations, the formulation F2 containing drug: polymer (Drug:HPMC K4M) in
1:3.5 ratio was found to have highest similarity factor with the theoretical drug release profile than all the other formulations. There is no physicochemical interaction between drug and excipients and the compatibility study is carried out by FTIR and DSC studies.
Keywords: Clopidogrel bisulfate, sustained release, HPMC, HPC.
