ABSTRACT
Role of adjuvant like milk, honey, water etc., in boosting the therapeutics of several AYUSH drugs are claimed in the respective books of Siddha and Ayurveda. However the above claims lack proper scientific explanation. Our present study on Licorice interestingly gives a hope and merit for the above postulate. Licorice is known to suppress the activity of tyrosinase enzyme. But ironically it had promoted melanin production by not acting upon Phenol oxidase enzyme, an analogue of tyrosinase. It may be due to the possible differences in the target site specificity of tyrosinase and phenol oxidase or may be due to some constituents in mustard as the organism Cryptococcus neoformans was used for the above study and which was grown in mustard medium. In the present paper, we have scientifically attempted to explain the above mystery by linking such findings with ancient science and its thoughts.
Keywords: Cryptococcus neoformans, tyrosinase, Glycyrrhiza glabra.
