ABSTRACT
The antibacterial property of leaves of Tecoma stans, Ixora coccinea and Aerva lanata were studied against drug-resistant cattle pathogenic bacteria, Streptococcus sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by agar well diffusion methods. Five solvents such as ethanol, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether, chloroform and acetone were used for the extraction. All the bacterial strains were found to be sensitive to most of the solvents. The antibacterial activity measured by disc diffusion method. The disc diffusion result showed that the ethanol extract of I.coccinea had the maximum antibacterial potential against streptococcus sp. bacterial strain with zone of inhibition in 18mm followed by the same extract of T.stans with zone of inhibition in 16mm. While other plant leaves showed moderate degree of inhibition. The significant zone of inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa against ethanol extract of
I.coccinea leaf was 10mm and followed by the same extract of T.stans with 5mm. The results presented here should encourage the use of referred plant leaves for livestock pharmaceutical applications.
