ABSTRACT
Plants have been an important source of medicine for various thousands of diseases around the world. The drug efficiency of various parts of the plant can be evaluated by antibacterial test with various pathogens. Present study was carried out the antibacterial efficacy of Lantana camara ornamental plant leaf, flower, fruit, stem and root against selected poultry pathogens. The plant extract was prepared with five solvents such as chloroform, methanol, acetone, diethyl ether and ethyl acetate. The zone of inhibition againt gram negative and gram positive organisms such as E.coli., Salmonella typhimurim, and Staphylococcus aureus of poultry using disc diffusion method. Two antibiotics such as gentamicin and tetracycline were used as positive control and blank disc chocked in respective solvent as negative
control. This study revealed that the stem and root of Lantana camara have significant antibacterial activity in all the selected pathogens and highly comparable with the selected antibiotics. Among all the plant parts, stem showed the maximum activity against all the selected pathogens. The stem part showed the zone of inhibition of 15mm against E.coli in ethyl acetate solvent, 20mm Salmonella typhimurim and Staphylococcus aureus in chloroform. This study documented that the bioactive compounds present in this plant can be utilized for the formulation of ayurvedic medicine for poultry to control the referred bacterial diseases.
