ABSTRACT
A simple, precise, accurate and rapid spectrophotometric method for the estimation of micro amounts of the drug Nortriptyline using Wool Fast Blue(WFB) dye which forms an ion-association complex at pH 1.5 when it is extracted into chloroform at a wavelength of 590 nm is presented in this communication. The linear curve obtained between the amount of Nortriptyline and the absorbance shows the obedience of Beer Lambert’s law and confirms the suitability of the proposed method for the quantitative estimation of micro amounts of Nortriptyline in the range of 2 μg/ml to 20 μg/ml. The method
proposed is applied to evaluate the assay of Nortriptyline drug in
pharmaceutical formulations in commercial tablets and the results agree very well. The molar absorptivity and Sandell sensitivity of the method are 1.052 x 104 lit.mol-1.cm-1 and 0.02504 μg.ml-1.cm2 respectively.
