FORMULATION AND QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF MOUTH WASH USING TERMINALIA CHEBULA SEEDS AND NEEM TWIG

ABSTRACT
Maintaining a good oral hygiene aids in keeping our overall health in a good shape. The mouth is an essential part of the gut, and hence any oral disease will directly or indirectly affect the GI tract too. Several chemical-based mouth washes are available in the market for maintaining oral hygiene. However, these chemicals can wash off diverse array of microbes, including the beneficial oral flora, which in turn affects the microbiome in our gut and the overall health of the body. In ancient time, Neem was extensively used as a traditional medicine for several diseases including cleaning of the oral cavities.
Terminalia chebula is also one of the ancient medicines used for a wide variety of therapeutic activities. The objective of this study is to find out the efficacy of Neem and Terminalia chebula against caries-inducing microorganism Streptococcus mutans, further formulating mouthwash which has the efficiency to inhibit the growth of the microorganism. Based on the outcomes, the formulation was used to prepare a mouthwash by adding few other natural enhancers as taste enhancers and to have a better appearance.
