Abstract

EFFECT OF CINNAMON EXTRACT ON THE BODY WEIGHT, BODY MASS INDEX, FASTING BLOOD SUGAR AND HBA1C IN OBESE DIABETIC PATIENTS.

ABSTRACT

Aim: To determine the effect of cinnamon on fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin (Hb) A1c, bodyweight and body mass index in diabetic obese patients. Patients and Methods: A total of 30 type 2 diabetic obese patients of both sexes, aged 49.1 ± 6.0, were randomly assigned to receive either 1 g of cinnamon or placebo daily for 12 weeks. Results: A highly significant (P ≤ 0.001) reduction of fasting blood glucose level after 12 weeks of treatment by 12.3%, compared to placebo group at corresponding duration. The glycosylated Hb reduced in cinnamon treated group by (9%) after 12 weeks, compared with placebo group 4.8% with significant effect P ≤ 0.01. The cinnamon was significant effect in the level of cholesterol which reduced by 21.37% compared with placebo group 8.3% and reduced of T.G by 12.34% compared to placebo group 2.61% with significant effect, in HDL the cinnamon was able to elevated the HDL by 11.52% compared with placebo group 1.57% and LDL was reduced in cinnamon group by 31.75% compared with placebo group 11.34%. The cinnamon was showed reduction in body weight after 12 w by 6.55% compared with placebo group which are reduced by 3.78% and the BMI was reduced by 3.36% in cinnamon group compared to placebo group 1.58%. Conclusion: Intake of 1 g of cinnamon for 12 weeks reduces fasting blood glucose and glycosylated Hb among o type 2 diabetes obese patients, as well as, there is improvement to reduced lipid profile and body weight.
