Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF SUSTAINED RELEASE MATRIX TABLETS OF LAMOTRIGINE BY USING WETGRANULATION METHOD

Dr. Pilli Rohini*, D. Venkatala Lakshmi and Maddumala. Rajeswari

ABSTRACT

Matrix tablets are very useful in the field of healthcare for sustained release dosage regimen. Keeping this in view, the present investigation has been aimed at designing suitable sustained release matrix tablets using polymers as hydroxylpropyl methylcellulose and hydroxyl propyl-cellulose. Lamotrigine used as anti epileptic drug, Analgesics Anti depressants, Antimanic Agents, Calcium Channel Blockers, Excitatory Amino Acid Antagonist. Until recently, it was not known where, in the gastrointestinal tract, Lamotrigine is absorbed. In carrying out a regional absorption study it has recently been discovered that the extent of absorption of Lamotrigine is consistent when the drug is delivered to any point in the GIT between stomach and the ascending colon. Hence sustained release formulation of Lamotrigine is chosen for the formulation of sustained release tablets and to see the feasibility to overcome the above discussed effect. The basic goal of therapy is to achieve a steady state blood or tissue level that is therapeutically effective and non-toxic for an extended period of time. Sustained release drug delivery systems, with an aim of improved patient compliance, better therapeutic efficacy, less side effects and reduced dosage regimen with less toxicity for treatment for many acute and chronic diseases.

Keywords: Lamotrigine, Wetgranulation, Sustained release matrix tablets.
