ABSTRACT
Objective: Main aim of the present study was to determine antibacterial and antithrombotic potential of Nelumbo nucifera leaves. Methods: shade dried leaves of lotus plant was ground in low temperature conditions which was further subjected to soxhlet extraction using ethanol as solvent. Extract obtained was dried to powder form and its dilutions were made in various concentrations using DMSO. Finally these various concentrations were checked for antibacterial activity against E. Coli and antithrombotic activity against rat blood. Results: Present study revealed that Nelumbo nucifera is a flowering plant, having plenty of medicinal properties. Biological activity on account of well diffusion assay revealed promising
antibacterial activity against E.coli which was in near comparison to drug of choice chloramphenicol. Appreciable results were obtained when a logarithmic increase in time delay was obtained to observe the blood clot. However thrombolytic activity still remains skeptical. Conclusion: Nelumbo nucifera leaves may evolve as a natural drug of wonder for patients suffering from cardio-vascular diseases as it has potential antibacterial and antithrombotic activities.
