Abstract

CYTOTOXIC AND ANTIPROLIFERATIVE ACTIVITY OF ADAIKAMANI THAILAM PRESCRIBED TO CURE BREAST CANCER, INDIA

Dr. R. Mary Suja* and B. Christudhas Williams

ABSTRACT

The main objective of the present investigation is to evaluate the phytochemical constituents, antioxidant potential, cytotoxic and antiproliferative effect of Siddha Cancer medicine prescribed by the Traditional Siddha Practitioner of Kanyakumari District, India. Adaikamani Thailam is an internal form of Breast Cancer medicine prescribed above 18 years was prepared with 23 different plant ingredients. Phytochemical analysis of the Adaikamani Thailam, aqueous, silver nitrate and ethanol extract revealed the presence of alkaloid, saponin, terpenoid and steroid constituents. The unexplored area of hydroxyl radical scavenging, DPPH, nitric oxide radical scavenging, hydrogen per oxide scavenging and reducing power activity of the Adaikamani Thailam and extracts indicated promising antioxidant activities in concentration dependent manner. Siddha Cancer medicine was tested against human breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7) and antigrowth effect was assayed by the MTT assays. The cytotoxic activity on cultured l929 cells and antiproliferative effect on MCF-7 cultured cells highlights the effect of Adaikamani Thailam as a great potential source to rid Breast Cancer.

Keywords: Siddha, Kalanchi, antioxidation, MTT assay, Adaikamani Thailam, MCF-7.
