Abstract

PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES OF VARIOUS EXTRACTS OF AERIAL PARTS OF ARTEMISIA CAMPESTRIS L. FROM ALGERIA

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to evaluate the preliminary phytochemical screening, total phenolics and antioxidant activities of three different extracts (Chloroforme, Ethyl acetate and Methanol) from the aerial parts of Artemisia Campestris L. The phytochemical tests indicated the presence of flavonoids, Saponins and alkaloids in each extract. Total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids of different extracts ranged from 78.30±2.90 to 110.56±4.40, 43.58±2.91 to 74.40±1.67 mg/g dry weight respectively. The antioxidant activities of A. campestris determined by the 2,2‟-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and the reducing power (FRAP) assays produced concentration-dependent values comparable to that of ascorbic acid control. Chloroform extract of aerial parts of A. campestris was found to be comparatively rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants which suggest the preferable use of non-polar solvents for extraction of such substances from plant material. The results would be a significant contribution regarding phytochemical and antioxidant importance of A. campestris.
