HISTOLOGICAL STUDIES OF MICE, MUS NORVEGICUS ALBINUS, KIDNEY ON TREATMENT WITH 1-DEOXYNOJIRIMYCIN

ABSTRACT
The effects of 1-deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) on diabetic induced mice were studied. DNJ is a natural bio active product mostly found in mulberry plants. The efficacy of DNJ for diabetes was reported by many researchers in animals and human. Kidney places an important key role in eliminating unwanted substances from the blood. Hence the author’s aims to study the histopathalogical changes in control, diabetic induced mice as well as DNJ treated mice. The study was conducted on male mice; the animals were grouped into six and each group comprising 5 mice. The 1st group was treated as a control and
given distilled water only. The 2nd and 3rd group’s treated with 1- Deoxynojirimycin 40 mg/kg b.w. and 60 mg/kg b.w. respectively. The 4th group was used as a diabetic control and Streptozotocin (STZ) was used to produce diabetes. The 5th and 6th diabetic groups were administered with 1-Deoxynojirimycin at the dose 40 mg/kg b.w. and 60 mg/kg b.w. respectively for 30 days. The histological sectioning of tissue was followed as per the standard protocols. Histological sections were prepared and observed under light microscope Olympus (PM-6 Model). The results indicated that STZ treated mice exhibited severe kidney hypertrophy. The mice treated with DNJ exhibited antidiabetic potential in kidney and it is concluded that DNJ alleviated the development of diabetic nephropathy in mice especially on exposure to higher dose of DNJ.
