ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF MARINE AND MANGROVE ACTINOMYCETES - A REVIEW
T. Janaki*
ABSTRACT
Every day, the medical world is facing lot of obstacles and challenges from drug resistant pathogens that cause infectious diseases. Microbiologists search better and novel drug for these types of pathogens from other antagonists. Among the microbial antagonists, the actinomycetes are found to be better in production of novel bioactive compounds. New novel drug depends on rare actinomycetes from new or unexplored source of origin. So, research work on different pretreatment methods and use of different culture media for isolating marine and mangrove actinomycetes are being progressed. Different methods have been used by the researchers to measure the antimicrobial activity from the rare actinomycetes. The rare actinomycetes are very difficult to maintain and more attention is needed. These may be sensitive to environment but they produce novel bioactive compounds to treat dreadful diseases caused by Extensively Drug Resistant (XDR) and Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) pathogens. Novel and broad spectrum antimicrobial agents are needed to control or destroy frequently emerging multi drug resistant pathogens.
